Unit Mission
The Environmental Law & Conservation Policy Integration Team works at the intersection of environmental law, conservation science, and policy development — analyzing legal frameworks for biodiversity protection, identifying gaps and weaknesses in national and international conservation law, and advising on legal reforms that strengthen protection for threatened species and ecosystems. The team engages with international treaty bodies, national governments, and civil society to advance the legal and policy architecture needed for effective biodiversity conservation.
Key Functions
Legal Framework Analysis
Analyzing national and international legal frameworks for biodiversity protection — identifying gaps, inconsistencies, and enforcement weaknesses that undermine conservation effectiveness and developing targeted legal reform recommendations.
Treaty Engagement
Engaging with international conservation treaty bodies — CITES, CBD, Ramsar, CMS — to advance compliance, strengthen implementation, and develop new legal instruments that address emerging conservation challenges.
Policy Integration
Integrating conservation objectives into broader policy frameworks — mainstreaming biodiversity considerations into land use planning, agricultural policy, and development planning to reduce the policy incoherence that drives habitat loss.
