Unit Mission

The Environmental Justice & Structural Equity Analytics Team investigates the structural factors that cause environmental burdens — pollution, contamination, and environmental hazards — to be disproportionately concentrated in low-income, minority, and indigenous communities. The team applies spatial analysis, epidemiology, and social science to document environmental injustice, identify its structural drivers, and develop policy recommendations and community-centered interventions that advance equitable environmental protection.

Key Functions

Burden Mapping

Mapping the spatial distribution of environmental burdens and community vulnerability — identifying cumulative impact hotspots where multiple pollution sources, hazards, and social vulnerabilities converge to create disproportionate environmental injustice.

Disparity Analysis

Analyzing health and environmental disparities between communities — documenting the differential exposure and health outcomes experienced by marginalized communities and identifying the regulatory and enforcement failures that perpetuate inequity.

Policy Advocacy

Developing policy recommendations that advance environmental justice — advocating for equitable enforcement, cumulative impact consideration in permitting, and community benefit agreements that address the structural drivers of environmental inequity.
