Unit Mission

The Endangered Flora/Fauna & Genetic Preservation Field Unit conducts field collection and laboratory preservation of genetic material from endangered species — building biobanks of seeds, tissue, gametes, and DNA that preserve genetic diversity as insurance against extinction. The unit applies conservation genomics to characterize genetic diversity, identify evolutionarily significant units, and inform breeding and reintroduction programs that maintain the adaptive potential of threatened species.

Key Functions

Biobanking

Collecting and preserving genetic material from endangered species — building seed banks, tissue collections, and cryopreserved gamete repositories that maintain genetic diversity as insurance against wild extinction and support future restoration.

Conservation Genomics

Applying genomic tools to conservation challenges — characterizing genetic diversity, identifying inbreeding depression, and detecting adaptive variation to inform breeding program management and reintroduction site selection.

Genetic Rescue

Designing genetic rescue interventions for small, inbred populations — developing translocation programs that introduce new genetic variation to restore fitness and adaptive potential in populations at risk of extinction vortex dynamics.
