Unit Mission
The Emerging & Disruptive Technology Threat Mitigation Team assesses the environmental and security risks posed by emerging and disruptive technologies — geoengineering, synthetic biology, advanced AI, and autonomous systems — and develops governance frameworks for responsible innovation. The team applies technology assessment, risk analysis, and science policy to identify the unintended consequences and systemic risks of emerging technologies before they become irreversible, and advocates for precautionary governance that enables beneficial innovation while preventing catastrophic harm.
Key Functions
Risk Assessment
Assessing the environmental and security risks of emerging technologies — evaluating the potential for unintended consequences, systemic risks, and irreversible harms from geoengineering, synthetic biology, and other disruptive innovations.
Governance Development
Developing governance frameworks for responsible emerging technology innovation — designing regulatory approaches, international agreements, and oversight mechanisms that enable beneficial applications while preventing catastrophic misuse.
Precautionary Advocacy
Advocating for precautionary governance of high-risk emerging technologies — engaging with international bodies, national regulators, and industry to establish safeguards before technologies are deployed at scale.
