Unit Mission
The Ecosystem Risk Assessment & Collapse Prevention Team applies the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems framework and related risk assessment methods to evaluate the risk of ecosystem collapse — the catastrophic and potentially irreversible loss of ecosystem structure, function, and biodiversity. The team develops ecosystem risk assessments, identifies early warning indicators of approaching collapse thresholds, and advises on conservation interventions that prevent ecosystems from crossing tipping points into degraded states.
Key Functions
Collapse Risk Assessment
Conducting ecosystem risk assessments using the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems criteria — evaluating the distribution, function, and biotic integrity of ecosystems to classify their risk of collapse and identify priority intervention needs.
Early Warning Systems
Developing early warning systems that detect ecosystem deterioration before collapse thresholds are crossed — identifying leading indicators of regime shifts and deploying monitoring networks that provide timely alerts for management intervention.
Tipping Point Prevention
Advising on conservation and management interventions that prevent ecosystems from crossing collapse thresholds — developing strategies that maintain ecosystem resilience and reverse deteriorating trajectories before irreversible change occurs.
