Unit Mission
The Drinking Water Purity & Aquifer Security Unit monitors drinking water quality, investigates contamination threats to water supply sources, and advises on source water protection measures that safeguard the aquifers and surface water bodies that communities depend on for safe drinking water. The unit applies hydrogeology, water chemistry, and public health science to characterize contamination risks, develop source water protection plans, and support regulatory action against activities that threaten drinking water security.
Key Functions
Source Protection
Developing source water protection plans that identify and manage threats to drinking water sources — delineating wellhead and watershed protection areas, assessing contamination risks, and developing management measures that prevent pollution.
Contamination Response
Investigating drinking water contamination incidents — characterizing contaminant sources, assessing health risks, and advising on treatment and alternative supply measures that protect public health during contamination events.
Aquifer Security
Assessing aquifer vulnerability to contamination and over-extraction — mapping hydrogeological conditions, monitoring groundwater quality trends, and advising on land use controls that protect aquifer integrity for long-term water security.
