Unit Mission
The Desertification & Arid-Land Expansion Intervention Team works to combat desertification, land degradation, and drought — the interconnected processes that threaten the livelihoods of over two billion people in dryland regions. The team applies land degradation assessment, dryland restoration ecology, and sustainable land management to develop interventions that halt degradation, restore degraded drylands, and build the resilience of arid-land communities to drought and climate variability.
Key Functions
Degradation Assessment
Assessing land degradation status and trends in dryland regions — mapping degraded areas, characterizing degradation processes, and quantifying the economic and social costs of desertification to prioritize intervention.
Restoration Interventions
Developing dryland restoration interventions — designing reforestation, revegetation, and soil conservation programs adapted to arid conditions that restore ecosystem function and productivity while building community resilience.
Policy Engagement
Engaging with UNCCD processes and national drought policies — advocating for land degradation neutrality targets, supporting national action program development, and promoting the integration of sustainable land management into agricultural and development policy.
