Unit Mission
The Democracy, Human Rights & Labor Rights Diplomatic Unit advances democratic governance, human rights protection, and labor rights through diplomatic engagement, international accountability mechanisms, and civil society support. The unit engages with UN human rights bodies, regional human rights systems, and national governments to promote democratic norms, document human rights violations, and advocate for accountability — while supporting civil society organizations and human rights defenders working to advance rights at the national level.
Key Functions
Rights Monitoring
Monitoring and documenting human rights conditions — tracking violations, assessing democratic backsliding, and producing authoritative human rights reports that inform diplomatic engagement and international accountability processes.
Accountability Engagement
Engaging with international human rights accountability mechanisms — submitting reports to UN treaty bodies, engaging with special procedures, and advocating for accountability for serious human rights violations.
Civil Society Support
Supporting civil society organizations and human rights defenders — providing technical assistance, advocacy support, and protection for organizations working to advance human rights and democratic governance at the national level.
