Exploring and documenting deep-ocean biodiversity using submersible technology to inform conservation of the least-known ecosystems on Earth.
Unit Mission
The Deep-Ocean Biodiversity Survey & Submersible Task Force conducts systematic surveys of deep-ocean ecosystems — hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, seamounts, and abyssal plains — using remotely operated vehicles and crewed submersibles to document the extraordinary biodiversity of the least-explored environments on Earth. The task force generates the baseline biodiversity data needed to assess conservation status, evaluate threats from deep-sea mining and bottom trawling, and inform the governance of areas beyond national jurisdiction.
Key Functions
Deep-Sea Surveys
Conducting systematic deep-ocean biodiversity surveys using ROVs and submersibles — documenting species composition, abundance, and distribution across hydrothermal vents, seamounts, and abyssal habitats to build the baseline needed for conservation assessment.
Threat Assessment
Assessing the impacts of deep-sea mining, bottom trawling, and other extractive activities on deep-ocean biodiversity — providing the scientific evidence base for conservation measures and environmental impact assessments.
Governance Engagement
Engaging with international governance processes for areas beyond national jurisdiction — contributing scientific evidence to BBNJ treaty negotiations and ISA regulatory processes to strengthen deep-ocean conservation frameworks.
