Unit Mission

The Coastal Resilience & Sea-Level Rise Engineering Unit develops engineering and nature-based solutions that protect coastal communities and ecosystems from the accelerating threats of sea-level rise, storm surge, and coastal erosion. The unit applies coastal engineering, physical oceanography, and ecosystem-based adaptation to design resilient coastal protection systems — integrating hard infrastructure, living shorelines, and managed retreat strategies to maintain coastal safety and ecosystem integrity under projected sea-level rise scenarios.

Key Functions

Risk Assessment

Assessing coastal flood and erosion risks under sea-level rise scenarios — modeling storm surge inundation, shoreline change, and infrastructure vulnerability to identify the communities and assets most at risk from coastal climate change.

Resilience Engineering

Designing coastal resilience solutions — developing integrated protection systems that combine hard infrastructure, living shorelines, and ecosystem restoration to maintain coastal safety while preserving natural coastal processes.

Managed Retreat

Planning managed retreat from high-risk coastal areas — developing relocation frameworks, community engagement processes, and land use policies that enable safe, equitable retreat from areas where protection is not feasible.
