Climate Change & Planetary Boundary Defense Task Force

Defending planetary boundaries and coordinating global climate action to prevent catastrophic and irreversible Earth system change.

Unit Mission

The Climate Change & Planetary Boundary Defense Task Force coordinates global climate action and monitors the status of planetary boundaries — the biophysical limits within which humanity can safely operate. The task force tracks progress toward climate targets, assesses risks of crossing tipping points, and advocates for the accelerated emissions reductions and ecosystem protection needed to keep Earth system change within safe limits. It engages with UNFCCC processes, national governments, and civil society to strengthen climate ambition and accountability.

Key Functions

Boundary Monitoring

Monitoring the status of planetary boundaries — tracking Earth system indicators for climate, biodiversity, land use, freshwater, and biogeochemical flows to assess how close humanity is to safe operating limits and identify urgent intervention needs.

Tipping Point Analysis

Analyzing risks of crossing climate tipping points — assessing the proximity of ice sheet collapse, permafrost thaw, and ecosystem dieback thresholds to inform the urgency of emissions reduction and provide early warning of irreversible change.

Climate Advocacy

Engaging with UNFCCC processes and national governments to strengthen climate ambition — analyzing national climate commitments, tracking implementation progress, and advocating for the accelerated action needed to close the emissions gap.

Operational Capabilities

Planetary boundary status assessment
Climate tipping point risk analysis
UNFCCC process engagement
National climate commitment analysis
Climate finance tracking
Earth system modeling advisory
