Unit Mission
The Brownfields Revitalization & Contaminated Land Recovery Team works to transform contaminated brownfield sites — former industrial, commercial, and military properties — into productive community assets through remediation and redevelopment. The team applies environmental assessment, remediation engineering, and community development principles to characterize contamination, develop cleanup strategies, and facilitate redevelopment that delivers environmental justice, economic revitalization, and community benefit in areas burdened by industrial legacy contamination.
Key Functions
Site Assessment
Conducting Phase I and II environmental site assessments that characterize contamination at brownfield properties — identifying recognized environmental conditions, sampling soil and groundwater, and developing the data needed for cleanup planning and redevelopment.
Remediation Design
Designing cost-effective remediation strategies for brownfield sites — selecting cleanup approaches that achieve protective standards while enabling productive reuse, and developing the engineering plans needed for cleanup implementation.
Community Revitalization
Facilitating community-centered brownfield redevelopment — engaging affected communities in visioning processes, advocating for community benefit agreements, and supporting redevelopment plans that deliver affordable housing, green space, and economic opportunity.
