Unit Mission
The Atomic Energy Safety & Nuclear Non-Proliferation Task Force works to advance nuclear safety standards, strengthen non-proliferation regimes, and prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and materials. The task force engages with the IAEA, NPT review processes, and national nuclear regulatory bodies to strengthen safety culture, improve reactor design standards, and close the verification gaps that allow clandestine nuclear weapons programs to develop — contributing to a world where nuclear energy is safe and nuclear weapons are eliminated.
Key Functions
Safety Standards
Advancing nuclear safety standards and safety culture — reviewing reactor designs, assessing operational safety practices, and advocating for the regulatory frameworks and international standards needed to prevent nuclear accidents.
Non-Proliferation
Strengthening nuclear non-proliferation regimes — analyzing NPT compliance, identifying verification gaps, and engaging with IAEA safeguards processes to detect and deter clandestine nuclear weapons programs.
Material Security
Advising on nuclear material security — assessing the risks of nuclear theft and diversion, developing physical protection standards, and supporting the international cooperation needed to secure vulnerable nuclear materials worldwide.
