Unit Mission
The Arms Control, Deterrence & Nonproliferation Intelligence Unit advances arms control agreements, strengthens nonproliferation regimes, and develops intelligence assessments of weapons of mass destruction programs — contributing to the reduction of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons risks. The unit engages with treaty verification bodies, analyzes proliferation networks, and advises on deterrence strategies that maintain strategic stability while creating conditions for further arms reductions.
Key Functions
Treaty Strengthening
Advancing arms control treaty frameworks — analyzing compliance, identifying verification gaps, and advocating for treaty strengthening measures that reduce WMD risks and create conditions for further disarmament.
Proliferation Intelligence
Developing intelligence assessments of WMD proliferation networks — analyzing procurement patterns, technology transfers, and state programs to identify proliferation risks and inform interdiction and diplomatic responses.
Deterrence Analysis
Analyzing deterrence stability and escalation risks — assessing how changes in military capabilities, doctrine, and posture affect strategic stability and developing recommendations for maintaining deterrence while reducing nuclear risks.
