Unit Mission
The Air Quality, Greenhouse Gases & Emissions Monitoring Unit operates monitoring networks and develops analytical tools that track air pollutant concentrations, greenhouse gas emissions, and emission source attribution — providing the data needed to protect public health, enforce environmental regulations, and hold industrial polluters accountable. The unit applies atmospheric science, remote sensing, and emissions inventory methodology to characterize air quality conditions, identify pollution hotspots, and evaluate the effectiveness of emission reduction measures.

Operating air quality and greenhouse gas monitoring networks that provide continuous, high-quality data on pollutant concentrations and emission rates — supporting regulatory compliance, health protection, and climate accountability.
Source Attribution
Applying atmospheric modeling and isotopic analysis to attribute emissions to specific sources — identifying the industrial facilities, agricultural operations, and transportation sectors responsible for air quality violations and greenhouse gas releases.
Health Impact Assessment
Quantifying the public health impacts of air pollution — estimating excess mortality, respiratory disease burden, and economic costs attributable to air quality violations to support regulatory action and environmental justice claims.
