Unit Mission
The Volcanology & Geothermal Magma Dynamics Research Team researches magma dynamics and volcanic processes — conducting field investigations, laboratory analyses, and numerical modeling to understand the subsurface processes that drive volcanic eruptions and geothermal activity. The team applies volcanology, petrology, and geophysics to characterize volcanic systems, develop eruption forecasting models, and produce the scientific knowledge needed to improve volcanic hazard assessment and early warning.

Researching magma dynamics and volcanic processes — conducting petrological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations to understand the subsurface processes that control eruption timing, style, and intensity.
Eruption Forecasting
Developing eruption forecasting models — integrating monitoring data with physical models of volcanic systems to improve the accuracy and lead time of eruption forecasts.
Hazard Assessment
Conducting volcanic hazard assessments — characterizing the range of possible eruption scenarios, modeling hazard footprints, and producing the hazard maps needed for land-use planning and emergency response.
