Unit Mission
The Volcano, Ash-Fall & Geothermal Eruption Response Team responds to volcanic eruptions and ash-fall events — monitoring volcanic activity, coordinating evacuations from exclusion zones, and managing the complex response to lava flows, pyroclastic events, and ash-fall impacts. The team applies volcanology, volcanic hazard response, and community protection to provide the monitoring, warning, and response capabilities needed to protect communities from the diverse and unpredictable hazards of volcanic activity.
Key Functions
Activity Monitoring
Monitoring volcanic activity — operating seismic, deformation, and gas monitoring networks to detect changes in volcanic behavior and provide the early warning needed for timely evacuation and protective action.
Evacuation Coordination
Coordinating volcanic eruption evacuations — managing exclusion zones, coordinating community evacuations, and implementing the re-entry protocols needed to safely return populations when volcanic activity subsides.
Ash-Fall Response
Responding to volcanic ash-fall impacts — coordinating ash clearance, protecting water supplies and infrastructure from ash contamination, and providing the respiratory protection and health guidance needed by ash-affected communities.
