Unit Mission
The Tsunami & Coastal Inundation Response Team detects tsunamis and coordinates coastal evacuations — operating tsunami detection systems, disseminating warnings, and coordinating the rapid coastal evacuations needed to move populations to safety before tsunami waves arrive. The team applies tsunami science, warning system operations, and coastal emergency management to provide the detection, warning, and response capabilities needed to minimize casualties from tsunami and coastal inundation events.
Key Functions
Detection and Warning
Operating tsunami detection and warning systems — monitoring seismic and sea-level data, coordinating with Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and regional systems, and disseminating timely warnings that enable coastal evacuation.
Coastal Evacuation
Coordinating coastal evacuations for tsunami threats — managing evacuation routes, coordinating transportation, and implementing the rapid population movement needed to get coastal communities to high ground before tsunami arrival.
Post-Tsunami Response
Managing post-tsunami response operations — coordinating search and rescue in inundated coastal areas, assessing infrastructure damage, and managing the debris and contamination hazards left by tsunami inundation.
