Unit Mission

The Tornado, Severe Weather & Early Warning Dispatch Unit detects and warns of tornadoes and severe weather — operating early warning systems, coordinating with meteorological services, and dispatching response resources to enable life-saving protective action before severe weather impacts. The unit applies severe weather meteorology, warning system operations, and emergency dispatch to provide the timely, accurate warnings that enable communities to take shelter, and to pre-position response resources for rapid deployment when severe weather strikes.

Key Functions

Warning Operations

Operating severe weather warning systems — monitoring meteorological data, coordinating with National Weather Service and international partners, and disseminating timely tornado and severe weather warnings that enable protective action.

Storm Spotter Network

Managing storm spotter networks — training and coordinating volunteer storm spotters who provide ground-truth observations that improve warning accuracy and lead time for tornado and severe weather events.

Response Dispatch

Dispatching response resources for severe weather events — pre-positioning USAR teams, medical assets, and logistics resources based on storm track forecasts to enable rapid deployment when severe weather strikes.
