Sustainable Cities & Urban Planning Prototype Team
Prototyping sustainable urban planning solutions that build climate-resilient and equitable cities.
Unit Mission
The Sustainable Cities & Urban Planning Prototype Team prototypes sustainable urban planning solutions — designing, testing, and demonstrating urban planning approaches that build climate-resilient, equitable, and livable cities. The team applies urban planning, sustainability science, and design thinking to develop and prototype the land-use patterns, transportation systems, green infrastructure networks, and community design approaches needed to create cities that are resilient to climate change and provide quality of life for all residents.
Key Functions
Urban Prototyping
Prototyping sustainable urban solutions — designing and testing innovative urban planning approaches, from green infrastructure networks to transit-oriented development patterns, that improve city resilience and livability.
Climate-Resilient Planning
Developing climate-resilient urban plans — integrating climate risk assessment, adaptation measures, and mitigation strategies into urban planning frameworks that build long-term city resilience.
Community Co-Design
Facilitating community co-design processes — engaging residents in the design of their urban environments to ensure that sustainable city solutions reflect community needs and build the social acceptance needed for implementation.
