Unit Mission
The Soil Science, Geomorphology & Landslide Mechanics Team researches soil mechanics and geomorphological processes — conducting field investigations, laboratory analyses, and numerical modeling to understand the slope stability conditions and triggering mechanisms that drive landslides, debris flows, and other mass movements. The team applies soil science, geomorphology, and slope stability analysis to characterize landslide hazards, develop susceptibility maps, and produce the scientific knowledge needed for landslide risk reduction.
Key Functions
Slope Stability Analysis
Analyzing slope stability conditions — conducting geotechnical investigations, laboratory soil testing, and numerical modeling to assess slope stability and identify the conditions that predispose slopes to failure.
Susceptibility Mapping
Developing landslide susceptibility maps — applying geomorphological analysis and statistical modeling to map the spatial distribution of landslide hazard, informing land-use planning and risk reduction.
Early Warning
Developing landslide early warning systems — monitoring rainfall, soil moisture, and slope deformation to detect the precursory conditions that indicate imminent slope failure and enable timely warning.
