Unit Mission
The Radiological & Nuclear Accident Sensor Task Force detects and monitors radiological and nuclear accidents — deploying radiation detection networks, monitoring teams, and dose assessment specialists to characterize radiological releases, assess public health risks, and guide the protective action decisions needed to minimize radiation exposure. The task force applies radiation physics, nuclear emergency response, and dose assessment to provide the radiological intelligence needed for effective emergency response to nuclear power plant accidents, radiological dispersal devices, and other radiological emergencies.
Key Functions
Radiation Detection
Deploying radiation detection networks — operating fixed and mobile monitoring systems to detect radiological releases, characterize contamination, and provide the real-time data needed for dose assessment and protective action decisions.
Dose Assessment
Conducting radiological dose assessment — analyzing monitoring data, modeling plume dispersion, and calculating population dose to provide the health risk assessments needed for protective action recommendations.
Protective Action Guidance
Developing protective action recommendations — advising emergency managers on sheltering, evacuation, potassium iodide distribution, and food restriction measures based on radiological monitoring and dose assessment.
