Unit Mission

The Radiation Protection & Nuclear Response Task Force protects workers and the public from radiation hazards and manages nuclear emergency response — providing radiation protection advisory, deploying monitoring systems, and coordinating the emergency response needed to protect people from radiological and nuclear hazards. The task force applies radiation physics, health physics, and nuclear emergency management to assess radiation risks, implement protective measures, and manage the complex response to nuclear accidents and radiological emergencies.

Key Functions

Radiation Protection

Providing radiation protection advisory — assessing radiation exposure risks, developing protection programs, and advising on the shielding, distance, and time measures needed to keep radiation doses as low as reasonably achievable.

Emergency Response

Coordinating nuclear emergency response — managing the multi-agency response to nuclear accidents and radiological emergencies, implementing protective actions, and coordinating the decontamination and recovery operations needed to restore safety.

Decontamination

Managing radiological decontamination — deploying decontamination systems for personnel, equipment, and facilities, and coordinating the environmental remediation needed to reduce radiation levels in contaminated areas.
