Unit Mission
The Oil Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Team prevents and responds to oil spills — developing SPCC plans, deploying containment and recovery systems, and managing the environmental restoration needed to address oil spill impacts on marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The team applies oil spill science, containment technology, and environmental restoration to prevent spills through planning and inspection, contain and recover spilled oil rapidly, and restore affected ecosystems to pre-spill conditions.
Key Functions
SPCC Planning
Developing oil spill prevention, control, and countermeasure plans — assessing spill risks, designing prevention measures, and developing the response plans needed to contain and recover spilled oil rapidly.
Containment Operations
Executing oil spill containment operations — deploying boom, skimmers, and dispersants to contain and recover spilled oil, preventing its spread and minimizing environmental damage.
Ecosystem Restoration
Managing oil spill ecosystem restoration — assessing ecological damage, implementing shoreline cleanup, and conducting the habitat restoration needed to return oil-affected ecosystems to pre-spill conditions.
