Unit Mission

The Meteorology & Extreme Weather Genesis Center researches the genesis and intensification of extreme weather events — conducting observational studies, numerical modeling, and field campaigns to understand the atmospheric processes that produce hurricanes, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and other high-impact weather. The center applies dynamic meteorology, numerical weather prediction, and extreme weather research to advance understanding of extreme weather genesis, improve forecast models, and develop the scientific knowledge needed for better warnings and risk reduction.

Genesis Research

Researching extreme weather genesis — conducting observational and modeling studies of the atmospheric processes that initiate and intensify hurricanes, tornadoes, and severe weather to advance scientific understanding and improve forecasting.

Model Development

Developing numerical weather prediction models — improving the physical parameterizations and data assimilation systems that determine forecast accuracy for extreme weather events.

Field Campaigns

Coordinating extreme weather field campaigns — deploying research aircraft, mobile radars, and instrumented vehicles to collect the observational data needed to validate models and advance extreme weather science.
