Unit Mission

The Lead, Asbestos & Chemical Exposure Health Impact Unit assesses and mitigates lead, asbestos, and chemical exposure health impacts — conducting exposure assessments, health impact analyses, and remediation planning to protect communities and building occupants from the health hazards of legacy chemical contamination. The unit applies environmental health, industrial hygiene, and remediation engineering to identify lead and asbestos hazards, assess exposure risks, and develop the abatement and remediation strategies needed to eliminate these preventable health threats.

Key Functions

Exposure Assessment

Conducting lead and asbestos exposure assessments — surveying buildings and environments for hazardous materials, measuring exposure levels, and assessing the health risks posed by lead paint, asbestos-containing materials, and other chemical hazards.

Abatement Planning

Developing abatement and remediation plans — designing the removal, encapsulation, and management strategies needed to eliminate lead and asbestos hazards from buildings and environments safely and cost-effectively.

Health Protection

Protecting community health from chemical exposures — advising on protective measures, coordinating medical screening, and advocating for the remediation and regulatory action needed to eliminate preventable chemical exposure health impacts.
