Unit Mission

The Hydrology & River Basin Fluid Dynamics Facility models river basin hydrology and fluid dynamics — developing and applying hydrological models, hydraulic simulations, and flood forecasting systems to advance understanding of river basin water cycles and improve flood prediction. The facility applies hydrology, hydraulic engineering, and computational fluid dynamics to model rainfall-runoff processes, simulate flood inundation, and produce the hydrological forecasts needed for flood warning and water resource management.

Key Functions

Hydrological Modeling

Developing river basin hydrological models — building and calibrating rainfall-runoff models that simulate the water cycle processes determining streamflow, groundwater recharge, and flood generation.

Flood Forecasting

Operating flood forecasting systems — running real-time hydrological models to predict streamflow and flood levels, providing the advance warning needed for flood emergency response and evacuation.

Inundation Simulation

Simulating flood inundation — applying hydraulic models to map flood extents, depths, and velocities, producing the inundation maps needed for flood risk assessment and emergency planning.
