Unit Mission

The Heat Resilience & Urban Cooling Prototyping Task Force prototypes urban cooling solutions — designing, testing, and deploying cool roofs, green infrastructure, urban forestry, and other cooling interventions that reduce urban temperatures and protect communities from extreme heat. The task force applies urban climatology, building science, and landscape architecture to develop the evidence-based cooling strategies needed to make cities more resilient to extreme heat and reduce the health burden of urban heat islands.

Key Functions

Cooling Prototyping

Prototyping urban cooling interventions — designing and testing cool roofs, permeable pavements, green walls, and urban forestry systems to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing urban temperatures and improving thermal comfort.

Heat Island Analysis

Analyzing urban heat island dynamics — mapping urban temperature patterns, identifying heat island drivers, and developing the spatial analysis needed to target cooling interventions where they will have the greatest impact.

Resilience Planning

Developing urban heat resilience plans — integrating cooling interventions, cooling center networks, and heat emergency response into comprehensive strategies that protect urban populations from extreme heat.
