Unit Mission

The Groundwater Contamination & Aquifer Depletion Research Unit researches groundwater contamination and aquifer depletion — conducting hydrogeological investigations, contaminant transport modeling, and aquifer monitoring to understand the threats to groundwater resources and develop the knowledge needed for effective protection and remediation. The unit applies hydrogeology, contaminant hydrogeology, and water security science to characterize aquifer systems, model contamination transport, and produce the research needed to protect groundwater resources from depletion and pollution.

Monitoring aquifer conditions — operating groundwater monitoring networks to track water levels, quality, and depletion rates, providing the data needed to assess aquifer health and guide water resource management.

Contamination Research

Researching groundwater contamination — investigating contamination sources, modeling contaminant transport, and developing the scientific understanding needed for effective groundwater remediation.

Water Security Assessment

Assessing groundwater security — evaluating aquifer vulnerability to contamination and depletion, and developing the risk assessments needed to guide protective policy and investment.
