Unit Mission

The Glaciology, Cryosphere & Ice-Sheet Thermal Tracking Lab tracks cryosphere dynamics and ice-sheet thermal changes — conducting field measurements, remote sensing analysis, and numerical modeling to understand the processes driving glacier retreat, ice-sheet mass loss, and permafrost thaw. The laboratory applies glaciology, remote sensing, and climate science to monitor cryosphere change, model future ice-sheet evolution, and produce the scientific knowledge needed to project sea-level rise and assess climate impacts on cryosphere-dependent communities.

Key Functions

Cryosphere Monitoring

Monitoring cryosphere change — conducting field measurements and remote sensing analysis of glacier mass balance, ice-sheet dynamics, and permafrost conditions to track the pace and pattern of cryosphere change.

Ice-Sheet Modeling

Modeling ice-sheet dynamics — developing and applying numerical models of ice-sheet flow, thermal structure, and mass balance to project future ice-sheet evolution and sea-level contribution.

Impact Assessment

Assessing cryosphere climate impacts — evaluating the consequences of glacier retreat, permafrost thaw, and sea-level rise for communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure dependent on cryosphere services.
