Unit Mission
The Geophysics & Tectonic Plate Monitoring Laboratory monitors tectonic plate dynamics and geophysical processes — operating seismic networks, GPS deformation arrays, and geophysical monitoring systems to track the plate movements and stress accumulation that drive earthquakes and volcanic activity. The laboratory applies geophysics, plate tectonics, and hazard science to produce the monitoring data and scientific analysis needed to understand seismic and volcanic hazards, improve early warning systems, and advance the geophysical knowledge base that underpins disaster risk reduction.
Key Functions
Plate Monitoring
Monitoring tectonic plate movements and crustal deformation — operating GPS networks, InSAR systems, and seismic arrays to track the plate dynamics and stress accumulation that drive seismic and volcanic hazards.
Geophysical Analysis
Analyzing geophysical data for hazard assessment — processing seismic, deformation, and gravity data to characterize fault systems, assess seismic hazard, and advance understanding of the geophysical processes that generate disasters.
Hazard Modeling
Developing geophysical hazard models — building probabilistic seismic and volcanic hazard models that quantify the likelihood and intensity of future events, informing risk assessment and disaster risk reduction planning.
