Unit Mission
The Geomagnetism & Terrestrial Magnetic Field Research Unit researches terrestrial magnetic field dynamics — monitoring geomagnetic variations, studying field reversals and secular change, and assessing the implications of geomagnetic activity for navigation systems, power infrastructure, and space weather impacts. The unit applies geomagnetism, space physics, and geophysics to operate geomagnetic observatories, develop field models, and produce the research needed to understand geomagnetic hazards and protect infrastructure from geomagnetically induced currents.
Key Functions
Observatory Operations
Operating geomagnetic observatories — maintaining continuous magnetic field measurements, contributing to global geomagnetic monitoring networks, and producing the data needed for field modeling and space weather assessment.
Field Modeling
Developing terrestrial magnetic field models — analyzing observatory data to model the spatial and temporal variations of Earth's magnetic field, supporting navigation, resource exploration, and space weather research.
Infrastructure Protection
Assessing geomagnetic hazards to infrastructure — analyzing geomagnetically induced current risks to power grids, pipelines, and communication systems, and developing the protective measures needed to reduce geomagnetic storm impacts.
