Flood, Flash Flood & Dam Failure Hydrological Unit
Responding to flood emergencies and dam failures with swift-water rescue, flood control, and hydrological monitoring.
Unit Mission
The Flood, Flash Flood & Dam Failure Hydrological Unit responds to flood emergencies and dam failures — deploying swift-water rescue teams, flood control specialists, and hydrological monitors to conduct water rescues, implement flood control measures, and manage the complex response to dam failures and catastrophic flooding. The team applies swift-water rescue, flood hydrology, and dam safety to conduct life-safety operations in flood environments, assess dam integrity, and implement the emergency measures needed to protect downstream communities from catastrophic inundation.
Key Functions
Swift-Water Rescue
Conducting swift-water rescue operations — deploying boat teams, helicopter rescue assets, and swift-water swimmers to rescue people trapped by flooding, operating safely in fast-moving and debris-laden flood waters.
Dam Emergency Response
Responding to dam failures and emergency spillway operations — assessing dam integrity, coordinating emergency releases, and implementing the downstream warning and evacuation measures needed to protect communities from dam failure flooding.
Flood Control
Implementing emergency flood control measures — deploying sandbags, temporary flood barriers, and pump systems to protect critical infrastructure and communities from rising flood waters.
