Engineering

Energy-Efficient Buildings & Rapid 3D-Printed Eco-Shelter Lab

Developing energy-efficient and 3D-printed shelter solutions for disaster-affected and climate-vulnerable communities.

Unit Mission

The Energy-Efficient Buildings & Rapid 3D-Printed Eco-Shelter Lab develops energy-efficient and 3D-printed shelter solutions — designing and prototyping rapid construction systems, eco-shelters, and energy-efficient building technologies that provide safe, dignified, and sustainable housing for disaster-affected and climate-vulnerable communities. The laboratory applies construction technology, sustainable design, and additive manufacturing to develop the building systems needed to rapidly provide quality shelter while minimizing environmental impact and building long-term community resilience.

Key Functions

3D-Printed Shelters

Developing 3D-printed shelter systems — designing and prototyping additive manufacturing construction systems that can rapidly produce safe, durable, and dignified shelters for disaster-affected communities using locally available materials.

Energy Efficiency

Designing energy-efficient buildings — developing passive design strategies, insulation systems, and renewable energy integration that minimize energy consumption and provide thermal comfort in climate-vulnerable environments.

Rapid Construction

Developing rapid construction systems — engineering prefabricated, modular, and kit-of-parts building systems that can be quickly assembled by community members to provide quality shelter after disasters.
