Unit Mission

The Electrical Engineering & High-Voltage Microgrid Lab engineers resilient microgrids and high-voltage systems — designing distributed energy systems, grid protection schemes, and microgrid architectures that maintain power supply during disasters and enable rapid recovery from grid failures. The laboratory applies power systems engineering, microgrid technology, and grid resilience to develop the electrical infrastructure designs and protection systems needed to ensure power continuity for critical facilities and communities during and after disasters.

Key Functions

Microgrid Engineering

Engineering resilient microgrids — designing distributed energy systems with islanding capability that maintain power supply to critical facilities and communities when the main grid fails during disasters.

Grid Protection

Developing high-voltage system protection — engineering protection schemes, fault detection systems, and automatic reclosing devices that minimize outage duration and prevent cascading failures during disaster events.

Power Restoration

Engineering power system restoration — developing restoration strategies, switching procedures, and crew coordination protocols that enable rapid recovery of power supply after disaster-related grid damage.
