Unit Mission

The Drought, Famine & Heatwave Resilience Unit builds resilience to drought, famine, and extreme heat — operating early warning systems, implementing food security interventions, and deploying community cooling measures to reduce the mortality and suffering caused by slow-onset climate hazards. The unit applies drought monitoring, famine early warning, and heat health to detect emerging drought and heat emergencies, trigger early response, and implement the food security and cooling interventions needed to protect vulnerable populations from the deadly impacts of extreme heat and food insecurity.

Key Functions

Early Warning

Operating drought and famine early warning systems — monitoring rainfall, vegetation, food prices, and nutrition indicators to detect emerging food security crises and trigger early response before famine conditions develop.

Food Security Response

Implementing food security interventions — deploying emergency food assistance, supporting agricultural recovery, and coordinating the nutrition response needed to prevent famine and address acute malnutrition.

Heat Health Response

Responding to heatwave health emergencies — operating cooling centers, conducting heat health outreach to vulnerable populations, and coordinating the medical response to heat-related illness and mortality.
