Unit Mission

The Drinking Water Purity & Aquifer Security Unit protects drinking water purity and aquifer security — monitoring water quality, assessing contamination risks, and developing the protection strategies needed to ensure safe drinking water for communities dependent on groundwater and surface water sources. The unit applies water quality science, aquifer protection, and drinking water regulation to monitor source water quality, identify contamination threats, and develop the source water protection plans and treatment strategies needed to maintain safe drinking water supply.

Key Functions

Water Quality Monitoring

Monitoring drinking water quality — operating source water and distribution system monitoring programs to detect contamination, assess treatment effectiveness, and ensure that drinking water meets safety standards.

Source Protection

Developing source water protection plans — identifying contamination threats to drinking water sources, establishing protection zones, and implementing the land use controls and best management practices needed to protect source water quality.

Aquifer Security

Protecting aquifer security from contamination and over-extraction — assessing aquifer vulnerability, monitoring groundwater quality and levels, and advocating for the regulatory protections needed to ensure long-term aquifer security.
