Unit Mission
The Desertification & Arid-Land Expansion Analytics Unit analyzes desertification processes and arid-land expansion — conducting remote sensing analysis, field investigations, and land degradation modeling to understand the drivers and dynamics of desertification and guide prevention and restoration efforts. The unit applies land degradation science, remote sensing, and dryland ecology to monitor desertification, assess land degradation severity, and develop the analytical frameworks needed for effective land restoration and sustainable land management.
Key Functions
Desertification Monitoring
Monitoring desertification and land degradation — applying remote sensing and field methods to track vegetation loss, soil degradation, and arid-land expansion, providing the data needed for land management and restoration planning.
Driver Analysis
Analyzing desertification drivers — investigating the climatic, land use, and socioeconomic factors driving land degradation to develop the evidence base needed for effective prevention and restoration policy.
Restoration Assessment
Evaluating land restoration effectiveness — monitoring the outcomes of restoration interventions, assessing vegetation recovery and soil improvement, and developing the evidence needed to improve restoration practice.
