The unit applies land degradation science, remote sensing, and dryland ecology to monitor desertification, assess land degradation severity, and develop the analytical frameworks needed for effective land restoration and sustainable land management.

Monitoring desertification and land degradation — applying remote sensing and field methods to track vegetation loss, soil degradation, and arid-land expansion, providing the data needed for land management and restoration planning.
