Unit Mission

The Climate Change & Planetary Boundary Defense Task Force defends planetary boundaries and advances climate change mitigation — conducting climate science, developing mitigation strategies, and advocating for the policy frameworks needed to keep Earth's climate system within safe operating boundaries. The task force applies climate science, planetary boundary research, and climate policy to assess the state of Earth's climate system, develop evidence-based mitigation pathways, and advocate for the transformative action needed to prevent catastrophic climate change.

Key Functions

Boundary Assessment

Assessing planetary boundary status — monitoring Earth system indicators for climate, biodiversity, land use, and other boundaries to track humanity's position relative to safe operating space and identify emerging boundary violations.

Mitigation Strategy

Developing climate mitigation strategies — analyzing emission reduction pathways, carbon removal options, and policy mechanisms to develop the evidence-based mitigation strategies needed to limit warming to safe levels.

Policy Advocacy

Advocating for climate policy — engaging governments, international organizations, and civil society to advance the ambitious climate policies needed to achieve the emission reductions required to defend planetary boundaries.
