Unit Mission

The Civil Engineering & Structural Load-Testing Center tests structural systems under extreme loads — conducting full-scale and component-level testing of buildings, bridges, and infrastructure to advance disaster-resistant design and construction standards. The center applies structural engineering, materials science, and experimental mechanics to characterize structural behavior under seismic, wind, flood, and impact loads, developing the test data needed to validate design codes and improve the disaster resistance of the built environment.

Key Functions

Structural Testing

Conducting full-scale and component structural tests — applying seismic, wind, and impact loads to structural systems to characterize their performance, identify failure modes, and develop the data needed for disaster-resistant design.

Performance Evaluation

Evaluating structural performance under extreme loads — analyzing test results to assess structural adequacy, identify design improvements, and develop the performance criteria needed for disaster-resistant construction standards.

Code Development

Supporting structural design code development — providing the experimental data and technical analysis needed to develop and validate building codes that ensure adequate structural performance under disaster loads.
