Unit Mission

The Chemical Remediation & Heavy-Metal Neutralization Lab develops chemical remediation and heavy-metal neutralization technologies — researching and testing innovative treatment approaches for organic contaminants, heavy metals, and mixed waste streams that are difficult to address with conventional remediation methods. The laboratory applies environmental chemistry, materials science, and remediation engineering to develop the novel treatment technologies needed to address the most challenging contamination problems at industrial and mining sites.

Key Functions

Treatment Technology

Developing chemical treatment technologies — researching and testing innovative approaches for destroying organic contaminants, immobilizing heavy metals, and treating mixed waste streams that resist conventional remediation.

Heavy Metal Neutralization

Developing heavy metal neutralization methods — engineering chemical stabilization, electrokinetic remediation, and phytoremediation approaches that immobilize or remove heavy metals from contaminated soil and water.

Technology Evaluation

Evaluating remediation technology performance — conducting bench-scale and pilot-scale tests to assess the effectiveness, cost, and environmental acceptability of novel remediation technologies before field deployment.
