Brownfields Revitalization & Contaminated Land Recovery Team
Revitalizing brownfield sites and recovering contaminated land for productive community use.
Unit Mission
The Brownfields Revitalization & Contaminated Land Recovery Team revitalizes brownfield sites and recovers contaminated land — conducting site assessments, designing remediation systems, and managing the cleanup and redevelopment processes needed to transform contaminated industrial sites into productive community assets. The team applies environmental engineering, urban redevelopment, and community engagement to address the contamination legacy of industrial activity and create the conditions for sustainable brownfield redevelopment that benefits affected communities.
Key Functions
Site Assessment
Conducting brownfield site assessments — evaluating contamination extent, remediation requirements, and redevelopment potential to develop the information needed for cleanup planning and community redevelopment decisions.
Remediation for Redevelopment
Designing remediation systems for brownfield redevelopment — developing cleanup approaches that achieve the risk-based standards needed for intended land uses while minimizing cost and enabling timely redevelopment.
Community Engagement
Engaging communities in brownfield revitalization — facilitating community participation in site planning, ensuring that redevelopment reflects community needs, and building the community support needed for successful brownfield transformation.
