Acoustics, Sonar Engineering & Optic Sensor Design Unit

Designing acoustic, sonar, and optical sensor systems for disaster monitoring and environmental intelligence.

Unit Mission

The Acoustics, Sonar Engineering & Optic Sensor Design Unit designs acoustic, sonar, and optical sensor systems for disaster monitoring and environmental intelligence — developing the sensor technologies needed to detect, monitor, and characterize natural hazards, environmental conditions, and disaster impacts. The unit applies acoustics, sonar engineering, and optical physics to design and deploy sensor systems that extend monitoring capabilities into environments inaccessible to conventional instruments, advancing the observational foundation for disaster risk reduction.

Key Functions

Sensor Design

Designing acoustic and optical sensor systems — developing novel sensor technologies for disaster monitoring, including infrasound arrays for volcanic and explosion detection, sonar systems for underwater hazard monitoring, and optical sensors for atmospheric and surface observation.

Sonar Engineering

Engineering sonar systems for environmental monitoring — developing underwater acoustic systems for seafloor mapping, tsunami detection, and submarine hazard monitoring that extend observational capabilities into the ocean environment.

Network Integration

Integrating sensor networks for disaster monitoring — connecting acoustic, sonar, and optical sensors into coherent monitoring networks that provide the multi-parameter observations needed for comprehensive hazard detection and characterization.
