Research Mission
The Volcanology & Geothermal Magma Dynamics Research Team investigates volcanic processes, magma dynamics, and geothermal systems — advancing the scientific understanding needed for eruption forecasting, volcanic hazard assessment, and geothermal energy development. The team operates volcano monitoring networks, conducts field investigations, and develops numerical models of magmatic systems — providing the volcanological expertise needed to protect communities near active volcanoes and harness geothermal resources sustainably.
Key Research Functions
Eruption Forecasting
Integrating seismic, geodetic, geochemical, and thermal monitoring data to detect precursory signals of volcanic unrest and forecast eruption timing, style, and intensity — providing the advance warning needed for community evacuation and emergency response.
Hazard Mapping
Mapping volcanic hazard zones for lava flows, pyroclastic density currents, lahars, and ashfall — combining field mapping, deposit analysis, and numerical simulation to define the spatial extent and probability of volcanic hazards.
Geothermal Assessment
Assessing geothermal resources associated with volcanic systems — characterizing reservoir temperature, permeability, and fluid chemistry to evaluate the potential for sustainable geothermal energy development.
