Research Mission

The UUV & Maritime Robotics Unit develops unmanned underwater vehicle and surface vessel systems for ocean survey, subsea infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, and maritime domain awareness. The unit applies hydrodynamics, underwater acoustics, and marine systems engineering to create platforms that operate reliably in the challenging underwater environment — providing the maritime robotic capability needed for DARAS's ocean science, environmental, and security programs.

Key Research Functions

UUV Platform Development

Designing and building autonomous underwater vehicles optimized for endurance, depth rating, and sensor payload capacity — applying hydrodynamic optimization and pressure vessel engineering for reliable deep-water operations.

Underwater Navigation

Developing underwater navigation and positioning systems that maintain accurate localization without GPS — integrating inertial navigation, acoustic positioning, and terrain-aided navigation for precise subsea operations.

Environmental Monitoring

Deploying UUV and maritime robotic systems for ocean environmental monitoring — conducting bathymetric surveys, water column profiling, and seafloor mapping in support of DARAS environmental and climate research programs.
