Research Mission
The Terrestrial Robotics & Human-Machine Teaming Facility develops ground robotic systems and the human-machine teaming frameworks that enable operators to work effectively alongside robots in hazardous environments. The facility conducts research in legged and wheeled robot locomotion, manipulation, perception, and human-robot interaction — building the ground robotic capability needed for disaster response, hazardous material handling, and infrastructure inspection in environments too dangerous for human entry.
Key Research Functions
Ground Robot Development
Designing and building ground robotic platforms — wheeled, tracked, and legged — optimized for mobility across the terrain types encountered in disaster response, infrastructure inspection, and hazardous material operations.
Manipulation Engineering
Developing robotic manipulation systems capable of dexterous handling tasks in unstructured environments — enabling robots to open doors, operate tools, handle hazardous materials, and perform complex physical interventions.
Human-Robot Teaming
Engineering human-robot teaming frameworks that enable operators to effectively supervise and collaborate with ground robots — developing intuitive interfaces, shared autonomy architectures, and teaming protocols for operational deployment.
