Research Mission

The Telecommunications & Emergency VHF/UHF Mesh Radio Lab develops resilient telecommunications systems and mesh radio networks for emergency response and disaster operations — where conventional communications infrastructure has been destroyed or is unavailable. The lab designs VHF/UHF mesh radio systems, satellite communications integration, and emergency communications protocols that maintain connectivity for first responders, humanitarian workers, and affected communities when normal communications fail.

Key Research Functions

Mesh Radio Development

Designing and building VHF/UHF mesh radio systems that self-organize into resilient communications networks — providing voice, data, and situational awareness connectivity for emergency responders without fixed infrastructure.

Satellite Integration

Integrating satellite communications with terrestrial mesh networks to extend connectivity beyond line-of-sight and provide global reach for DARAS operations in remote and disaster-affected areas.

Interoperability Engineering

Developing communications interoperability solutions that enable different agencies, organizations, and nations to communicate effectively during joint emergency response — bridging incompatible radio systems and protocols.
