Research Mission

The Seismology & Earthquake Early-Warning Analytics Unit develops and operates earthquake early warning systems that provide seconds to tens of seconds of advance notice before strong ground shaking arrives — enabling automated protective actions and human response that save lives and reduce damage. The unit conducts seismological research into earthquake source processes, ground motion prediction, and warning algorithm development — advancing the science and technology of earthquake early warning for deployment in seismically active regions.

Key Research Functions

Early Warning Systems

Developing and operating earthquake early warning systems that detect P-wave arrivals and issue warnings before destructive S-waves and surface waves arrive — providing the seconds of advance notice needed for automated protective actions.

Ground Motion Prediction

Developing ground motion prediction equations and site response models that accurately forecast shaking intensity at specific locations — enabling targeted warnings and rapid post-event damage assessment.

Source Analysis

Characterizing earthquake source parameters — magnitude, focal mechanism, rupture extent, and stress drop — in near-real-time to support emergency response, aftershock forecasting, and tsunami warning systems.
