Research Mission
The Seismic Resilience & Earthquake Dampening Engineering Unit develops and applies seismic engineering solutions that protect buildings, bridges, and critical infrastructure from earthquake damage. The unit investigates seismic hazard characterization, structural response under seismic loading, and the design and performance of base isolation and energy dissipation systems — providing the earthquake engineering expertise needed to build resilient communities in seismically active regions.
Key Research Functions
Seismic Hazard Analysis
Conducting probabilistic and deterministic seismic hazard assessments that characterize ground motion intensity, frequency content, and spatial distribution — providing the hazard inputs needed for performance-based earthquake engineering.
Dampening System Design
Designing and validating seismic isolation and energy dissipation systems — base isolators, tuned mass dampers, viscous dampers, and buckling-restrained braces — that protect structures and their occupants from earthquake damage.
Seismic Retrofit
Developing seismic retrofit strategies for existing vulnerable structures — evaluating deficiencies, designing strengthening interventions, and verifying performance through analysis and testing to achieve target resilience levels.
