Research Mission

The Organic Chemistry & Synthetic Polymer Synthesis Unit designs and synthesizes novel organic compounds and functional polymers with targeted properties for applications spanning defense materials, medical devices, environmental remediation, and advanced manufacturing. The unit applies modern synthetic chemistry — including flow chemistry, asymmetric synthesis, and controlled polymerization — to create materials and molecules that address DARAS's most demanding performance requirements.

Target Molecule Synthesis

Designing and executing multi-step synthetic routes to target organic molecules — applying retrosynthetic analysis and modern synthetic methods to access complex structures with defined biological or material properties.

Polymer Engineering

Synthesizing functional polymers with controlled architecture, composition, and properties — applying living and controlled polymerization techniques to create materials with precisely tuned mechanical, thermal, and chemical characteristics.

Process Development

Developing scalable synthetic processes for priority compounds and materials — applying flow chemistry and process intensification to translate laboratory synthesis into efficient, safe, and reproducible production processes.
